Location Cranfield University, Bedfordshire
Scope 106 bed, 4 Storey Timber Frame Student Accommodation
Project Features The original structural concept for this scheme was based on a hybrid post and beam system combined with timber frame walls further complicated by the almost complete absence of external wall in favour of large scale windows. Using our in-house structural engineering expertise we developed an economical alternative that preserved the architectural concept whilst delivering an efficient prefabricated offsite solution. With this unique post and beam design solution and fully clad timber external facade, the challenging aspect of this project from a construction view point was to achieve the highest quality of builds within a extremely demanding timescale of 106 units in 6 weeks. Even with a ‘snowy’ start in early February 2009 the project was delivered smoothly and on time, Marriott went on to handover the project 2 weeks early as a result of this.
